Last minute booking. Furniture in the room was a little dated but 5 stars for a very comfortable bed, amazing bathroom with great shower. Lovely staff who were friendly and could not do enough for us. Loved the extra touches - packets of fudge in the room, decent tea, bottled water and good biscuits. Decent breakfast. Property is obviously the grandest in Buxton and a great looking building and ideally placed in the centre of town. Shared areas in the hotel are fine, but the bedroom was an all too common story of ageing English hotels, with a cheap attempt at a refresh but ultimately poorly maintained and not really living up to the expectations of the price and the rest of the hotel surroundings. Some staff helpful but only the 4th member was actually able to find an extra pillow after the previous 3 saying there were none available.

Be aware that there is clearly a big renovation project taking place. Our room had clearly had the room done but the bathroom, although spotless, was old. Our children’s room was the opposite. The two rooms although sold at the same price were entirely different sizes and one of the rooms had obviously been split from its neighbour with a bit of cardboard the soundproofing was so poor. It’s a beautiful old building so we know it won’t be perfect. It has loads of personality, is in a fab location, is spotless throughout and the breakfast was great. It’s perfect for a night but just not convinced it is 4*.
